Last weekend I photographed B-Boy Massacre 9 for Time Out NY. New York City has been going through something of a heat wave lately and stepping into Guz Indoor Sports Club along the Brooklyn/Queens border in Ridgewood was like stepping into a really loud sauna. It was already past 10pm when I arrived and the action was scheduled to go until 2am. The whole thing was a little bewildering at first but after a little bit of shooting I began to get a feel for the dancing. It was fascinating to see how b-boy culture has transcended broader cultural boundaries. This is something that I’d love to shoot again with a little more preparation and understanding of the culture.
